Vince Zampella, who helped create the wildly popular franchise Call of Duty, has died in a vehicle crash in California he was 55 years old.

The tragic news was announced by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, a game studio that he helped create.

The celebrated industry figure died after his automobile collided and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in Los Angeles on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This is a heartbreaking loss, and we stand with his family and friends, his family, and everyone impacted by his creative vision," an official with Electronic Arts commented.
