Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
