This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
