The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the plan.
A prominent delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the morning session finished without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive are released no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, medics stated.
