The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
