The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates the U.S. Box Office in Opening Weekend
Did Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the box office performance of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million at the box office, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the hundred-million-dollar milestone worldwide, hitting a worldwide gross of over $108 million this weekend. This movie outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive Domestic and Worldwide Earnings
Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed over $18 million in North America after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Globally, the produced by MAPPA film earned nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to $60.4M via Sony ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2M stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.
Comparisons to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies
Promotional firm White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, contrasting the movie's expected results to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the North America in 2022 and opened to a comparable $18M in the U.S.. The new film's opening frame matches that standard, while its $108M global gross currently tracks a bit short of the earlier film's over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will achieve the box office of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a significant success for the distributor.
Fan Engagement Campaigns Drive Success
The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to propel their leadership at the cinema for anime films. The movie's marketing campaign kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a notable appearance at New York Comic Con including never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and content creators as well after the final day of the event.
What’s Next
This year marks a big year for animated films, and for the studio, which has one more anime film debuting in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
