Severe Precipitation Worsen Circumstances for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Caution
Heavy rains over the last seven days have compounded the extremely difficult circumstances of the vast number of uprooted civilians in the region, according to humanitarian organizations.
"Awful" Weather Brings Severe Dangers
A representative described the previous night's conditions as "awful", with downpours so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"These conditions was really horrendous for the families. The heavy rains were so strong... And the gusts were so powerful," stated the representative.
Authorities voice significant concern that minors living in temporary structures in wet clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and various illnesses.
Casualties and Widespread Destruction
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has died from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have died in structural failures caused by the severe weather.
Further statements suggest a greater number of casualties. Officials reported that several structures had totally fallen and dozens had been partly destroyed.
- Nearly 55,000 families affected by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency shelters inundated.
- Many people required to relocate again.
Relief Operations Considered Insufficient
Agencies have stepped up shipments of shelter, bedding and garments after the ceasefire started, but they stress there is continues to be not enough aid getting in.
"Agencies are striving constantly to bring in that relief and to allocate it, but the scale of the needs is so enormous that we still have thousands of families and minors who are really suffering every night," stated one spokesperson.
Future Concerns and Ceasefire Provisions
The second phase of the truce includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the removal of troops, and other provisions.
Humanitarian bodies have stressed the need for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to respond to pressing and ongoing needs."
The hostilities was initiated by an offensive in late 2023. Following military operations have resulted in a substantial number of lives lost in the territory, as per medical data.
