NY Launches Portal for Public to Report Immigration Images After Detentions of 4 US Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a recent digital platform encouraging locals to share images and footage of ICE operations across New York. This move follows a day after a major ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering large-scale outcry.
American Citizens Detained In ICE Operation
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a statement.
"For those who saw and captured federal operations recently, I urge you to submit that evidence with my office. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and evaluating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The platform offers spaces to send visual evidence of the raid, along with a section to specify geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must check a checkbox that confirms that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known area of Manhattan where counterfeit products and other goods are sold daily widely – often to tourists.
Footage of the incident show several hooded and equipped officers restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of locals followed the agents through the streets. An armored truck was observed rolling through the city streets.
Official Reactions
During a news conference organized with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democratic representative, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for without cause." He noted the citizens were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is simply a excuse to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to prevent conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the federal action escalated – all three mayoral candidates condemned the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the Trump administration selects authoritarian theatrics that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.
NYC community groups expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and communities," remarked the leader of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it does not take into custody US citizens. However, investigative journalism has discovered that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and across the US lately.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies opposing ICE are ubiquitous as are accusations of violence and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a submission filed by legal entities claimed medical neglect of women with child in detention centers.
