Italy and Canada have raised concerns regarding the handling of their nationals who were assaulted and robbed by Jewish settlers in the Palestinian territories under occupation.

Details of the Violent Incident

A group comprising three Italians and one Canadian were assaulted in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday in the village of Ein al-Duyuk, near Jericho. They had volunteered to help protect the Palestinian population from intensifying settler violence.

“In the early morning of November 30th, 10 masked settlers, two carrying army-issued rifles, burst into the home where we were resting after a night shift,” said the Canadian national.

Each of the four required hospital treatment and one, an male Italian volunteer, was continuing to undergo treatment in the city of Ramallah on Monday for more substantial injuries.

Escalating Violence in Ein al-Duyuk

The frequency and severity of attacks in this area have increased substantially over the past two months. This follows the creation of an unauthorized settler encampment in the vicinity and the influx of new, confrontational settlers.

Activists say that aggressive acts have become an routine event. Attacks have included settler mobs breaking into homes, assaulting residents, and stealing livestock and property.

Legal Status and Government Reactions

While all settlements on land seized in 1967 are considered unlawful by the international community, unauthorized outposts are also illegal under Israeli law. The village is located within Area A of the West Bank, a zone meant to be administered of the Palestinian governing body.

Canada's Department of Global Affairs stated it “strongly condemns the acts of violence committed by radical settlers and opposes any actions or talk about absorbing Palestinian land.”

Italy's top diplomat, Minister Tajani, told reporters: “We have had enough of this hostility. This is not the way for anyone to assert their rights.”

Absence of Protection and Broader Context

Villagers and activists report there has been no meaningful police intervention to halt the assaults or dismantle the outpost. Leading members of the current Israeli government are vocal backers of settlements in the territory.

United Nations data indicates that settlers and Israeli forces have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of minors, in the West Bank over the last 24 months.

Voice of the Volunteers

The Canadian volunteer added that, despite the attack, she felt the international presence in Ein al-Duyuk had been meaningful.

“The residents felt more confident while we were present,” she said. “Kids were able to play outside. People slept through the night. That alone made our presence worthwhile.”

A Palestinian activist working with groups that bring in international observers said the new outpost has brought in far-right wing settlers who appear to be part of a coordinated network.
