Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
