Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
